The importance of mental health for inability to work

Published on: 22/12/2015

Mental disorders are the second highest cause of temporary and permanent leave from work, after musculoskeletal disorders. Among adults of working age, mental health problems result in the same number of sick leaves and social welfare costs as the rest of physical diseases all added together.

  • Mutua Universal has its own team of psychologists and psychiatrists, and through its own Telemedicine System, Online Clinic, we can visit workers in any of our Health Care Centres.
  • There are more than 1,200 visits with the psychologist via Online Clinic every year.
  • We have a wide support network with external psychiatry and psychology centres and professionals.

Our activity in work-related accidents

  • After the accident, intervene from the very start to minimise the onset of stress and anxiety disorders.
  • Apply the most effective psychological treatment to deal with stress disorders if they arise.
  • Introduce specific protocols for situations of risk for developing disorders

Our activity in non work-related accidents or diseases

90% of sick leaves are related to slight or temporary disorders (anxiety, depression and adaptable to different life circumstances). Presence of factors not health (relatives, economic, social…), that they influence in the temporary disability, frequently cause work problems.

Our objective:

  • Arrange a precise diagnosis, an assessment of work capacity and a forecast for returning to work as soon as possible.
  • As part of the assessment, advise, transmit knowledge to the patient so that they mobilise all their resources for their own recovery. “Empowerment”.
  • Working for health: to suffer a mental disorder and be in treatment does not incapacitate, in most cases, for undertaking a work activity.
  • The return to the work activity is always part of the treatment in the approach to healing.
